Blake Serif

Type Design

University project

About:
After many sketches and drafts, Blake Serif, a Slab with unique character, was born. Blake has many faces: he looks sassy in running text, shines in headlines and poses confidently on posters.

Blake was inspired by a song from the band Vampire Weekend, whose title is also the typeface’s namesake. “One (Blake’s Got a New Face)” underlines the characteristics of the glyphs and compliments their uniqueness.
Blake was designed in two weights: light and medium.

This image roughly shows the process of developing the letters and forms for Blake Serif. Some are initial drawings, hardly resembling the end result, while others show more similarities, as they developed later on in the process and then finally the ampersand which is an actual character of the final font.
